The specific name comes from the Greek ηετεροσ, meaning different and πογον, meaning beard, in reference to the fact that this is the only Oreoglanis known from the Salween River drainage bearing a maxillary barbel with a pointed tip.
  Etymology of generic noun
Greek, oreos = mountain+Greek, glanis = Latin, aurum = gold + Greek, glanis = a fish that can eat the bait without touching the hook; a cat fish (Ref. 45335).
